Veteran Metal Pioneer, Bob Muldowney, dies at 44

Veteran Metal Pioneer, Bob Muldowney, died Monday, Nov. 5th after suffering a year-long struggle with a Cardio Myopathy.

Muldowney was best known for his fanzine / magazine "Kick Ass" which helped expose, support and feature bands from Raven, Motorhead, Venom, The Rods, Tank, Exciter, & Riot, to the underground burgeoning thrash scene giving, in some instance,s the first coverage to Slayer, Megadeth, Midevil, and Anthrax. Muldowney was also one of the first journalists to expose the death metal scene in it's infancy, giving early press to Sodom, Hellhammer, Destruction & Bathory. It was Bob's love of true honest metal drove him to deliver a demo tape of a then unknown California band called Metallica into the hands of Rock & Roll Heaven store owner Johnny Z who was advertising with Kick Ass at the time.

Bob's brutally honest approach in his coverage helped Kick Ass develop a deep, loyal following who looked at his writings as "the metal bible". However, financial & distribution difficulties overtook the magazine and Kick Ass's last issue appeared the fall of 1986.

Prior to his passing, Muldowney & fellow Kick-Ass writer, Mike Hannon had begun work on a DVD history of Kick Ass magazine. Muldowney & Hannon have also re-exposed Kick Ass's history on this official myspace site:

...ist die neue Seite nun. Noch steht nicht alles zur Verfügung und einige Specials fehlen noch, aber diese werden in den nächsten Tagen und Wochen ebenfalls zur Verfügung stehen. Wir verstehen diese Seite als Fundament, welches es nun in den nächsten Jahren ständig weiter zu befüllen gilt. Auch dabei werdet Ihr in Zukunft wieder gefragt sein.
Darüber hinaus hat leider der Provider unseres Gästebuchs die Flügel gestreckt. Die alten Einträge waren nicht mehr zu retten. Übergangsweise haben wir bereits ein neues eingerichtet. Hoffentlich halten die wenigstens durch.

Hallo Leute!

Eine großartige Aktion steht ins Haus! Am 1. November möchte Bernemann (in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Rockhard) seine legendäre "Bernemann Kelly" für einen guten Zweck versteigern. Ein an Multiple Sklerose erkrankter Metalhead soll damit unterstützt werden. Hier der Originalwortlaut den ich heute per Mail bekommen habe:

"Everybody who watched a Sodom gig in the last 11 years has seen me playing my old camouflage Kelly. I recorded every CD and played nearly every show with this guitar. I really love it. Finally after all the years it was time for me to get a new one because the condition of my old bitch is not the best anymore.{But of course it`s still playable} With a heavy heart I decided to say good bye after I found a {very good}new axe. Together with the german ROCK HARD magazine I will start an internet auction at the 1st of November on eBay. The money we get is for the support of a german metal head who got Multiple Sklerosis. You will find more details at the 1st Nov. under www.ebay.de."
