| IN THE SIGN OF EVIL was the first mark Germanys SODOM did leave in the scene, and as you all might know up till now it has a great reputation in the Death/Black Metal scene (it didn't share the same in the press in it's original days, over the years this changed a little). Originally planed as a full LP the lable at the time DEVIL'S GAME decided to release only a five track EP to see the reactions, the other seven tracks never saw the light of day so far. As the original band members came together for some beers, original guitarist Grave Violator (aka. Josef“Peppi“ Dominic) mentioned a tape which included all the tracks recorded for the IN THE SIGN OF sessions. Since theres a lot of talk about this early recordings the trio decided to re-record the whole thing as a longplayer in 2007. Much to my surprise original drummer Chris Witchhunter is also part of that, in the DVD documentary LORDS OF DEPRAVITY PART 1 he sounded more than just displeased about his „departure“ of SODOM in the ninties. So now 12 Songs can be found instead the original 5, and I have to admit catching the 80s flair is easily achieved thanks to the retro/vintage producing job of webmaster Toto. Honestly I like the originals better the charm of youth just can't be denied, but this „new“ stuff also knows how to please. THE SIN OF SODOM or the simple midtempo stamper BLOODY CORPSE show something that was perfected on their first longplayer OBSESSED BY CRUELTY, this goes for the most of the songs, especially the instrumentation puts it in that direction. Sure most of the material might sound to simple for our modern days but this is that it makes stand out. On the other hand a track like HATRED OF GODS almost sounds like it has been composed in the ninties. Another thing (I hope Tom will not hang me for this one), it's unbelievable how the striking drumming of Chris does mark the SODOM music (even though he might have some timing problems).
